Having a car seat for your small dog is important for two reasons. First to keep your dog restraint so that it can't distract you whilst driving and second to keep your dog save when you suddenly have to brake. A dog that is not restraint by a car seat or a safety harness can endanger your, and his!, life by jumping suddenly into your lap or on the floor between your feet. In case the dog is loose in the car and you suddenly have to brake, it could be catapulted towards the windscreen and ultimately kill it. So, please take care that your dog is safely secured in a special dog car seat or another device as even small dog can do harm when not being properly controlled.
Also make sure that your small dog never travels on the front seat, as an activated airbag can kill a small dog that would otherwise have survived an accident. But if you want to have your small dog travel on the front seat, make sure that it is safely restraint in a special car seat for small dogs and that the airbag is switched off. Please make sure to switch the airbag back on when a human is traveling in that seat!

Different types of car seats for small dogs

Following are some examples of different ways to secure your small dog in a car. Choose the one that is the best solution for you, your dog and your car.

Car seat for a small dog

A car seat for a small dog consists of three parts. A harness to secure your dog in the seat, belts to fix the dog seat to the car seat and a comfortable basket for the dog to rest in. Remember that the airbag should be disabled when the car seat is fixed on the front seat. Many car seat for small dogs tend to be elevated so that even the smallest dog can look out of the window.

Dog seat belt/ harness

This method provides another way of restraining a dog safely in the car, typically the dog wears a harness that is attached via the seat belts to the car seat. It is important that the harness keeps the dog safely on the seat, even when the car has to brake suddenly and that it is not so loosely attached that the dog ends up tangling in the air.

Pet barrier for the back seat

This method restricts the dog to the back seats only. It is not as safe as the other methods as the dog is not restrained, just confined, but gives the dog the biggest mobility possible by keeping it safe at the same time. Especially during long journeys that might be the best method to use.

Thanks for the info on car seats. We tried all sorts for our dogs (jack Russels), but one of them should be called Houdini. She even managed to squeeze through the barrs of a dog barrier, so now they're both in a crate each!

You are welcome, we have a cat that managed one day to open the car door from inside her crate, hope your JRs are less artistic ;-) SY

Car seats for dogs and cats should definitely be required--for their safety and drivers/passenger safety. Pet owners need to be responsible for their little animal "kids" just like they are for their human kids.
