Ipad Case Reviews

By

Having the right Ipad case is essential, chances are that after you have spend nearly 500 US$ on your new iPad (or more!, depending on where you bought if from), you want to protect it as good as possible. iPad cases are a great and stylish way to achieve just this for your new gadget, but they are only the “tip of the iceberg” ;-)

Apart of Ipad cases, there are also screen protections, iPad holders, stands, and yes, iPad cases that come in all possible shapes, forms and colors. What kind you favor depends a bit on what you do with and where to you take your new iPad. And if you really want to stand out, you could even get an Ipad case from custom cases only for you!

There is a difference in protection need if you use your iPad mainly at home and only take it rarely with you. But on the other hand, if you have small children at home (or cats, see video below), your new “toy” might soon become their toy and will need an awful lot of extra protection! Completely different scenario if you are one of these geeks that don't feel properly dressed when they don't carry all their I-products with them. And even they need a stylish Ipad Carry Case.

An iPad as shiny new as when you bought it ;-)

You will need a case that is not only protecting your iPad, but that looks also stylish and passes the messages on that you are a true i-Geek ;-)

So lets look at different types of iPad protection solutions, and don't forget, they make also great gifts for the “i-Geek” in your life.

As this hub is called “ iPad Cases”, lets look at them first, before looking at other ways of protecting your newest electronic toy, sorry, tool. Before I forget it, I have included big photos of, nearly, each reviewed product, these images are not linked. To go to the full technical description, price, delivery procedure etc of each product, you have to click on the Amazon listing. Sorry about this, but it seems you can't link images to urls here ;-(

Simple iPad Case

Most of the time, this type of a simple, but padded!, case will be enough. It keeps your iPad safely in place, looks very elegant (black leather!) and the price can't be beaten. Only drawback, at least for me, it is not waterproof and it will not protect your iPad from any bigger impact like a fall from high. But it is the perfect solution if you take your gadget only occasionally for a walk and / or if you carry it normally in a bigger bag like a bag pack or messenger back. Combined with some sort of screen protection (see further below in this hub) this might be what you were looking for especially if funds are a bit tight after your major electronic investment!

Bubble Sleeve Case Big Photo

Bubble Sleeve Case

Now this one offers a lot more protection, for a slightly higher price. It is a rigid case with shock absorbing rubber bumpers that hold your iPad in place and secure it by absorbing impact shocks due to falls etc. It looks very nice and elegant and will surely add a good level of protection. Unfortunately I couldn't find out how much protection, no test results regarding “save enough to protect your iPad from a fall of xyz meter” seems to be available. Also if it looks pretty weatherproof, no exact information how weatherproof this sleeve case is could be found. One last word to an earlier problem this case had: The first models used glue to attach the “feet” to the case and some had problems with “oozing glue”. Models which are now sold have sewn-on feet and no “glue problems” have been reported recently.

Waterproof iPad Case

If your main concern is water / rain and / or you have to use your iPad frequently with less then sparkling clean fingers, this case might be the ideal solution for you. You can use your tablet whilst it is in the case, as the vinyl is soft and flexible enough to transfer your touch to the screen. Whilst I would be reluctant to submerge it fully in the pool or ocean. But for “spray protection” whilst using your iPad on the beach or on a boat, it is a pretty awesome solution. Remember, it protects also against dirt and dust, not only water! Another use would be when you have kids around that want to touch everything with their tiny little fingers and couldn't care less if these fingers are clean or for use in the kitchen (electronic cook book and greasy fingers anybody?). Additionally it comes with a shoulder / neck strap, allowing you to carry it “hands-free”. If you need an iPad case that protects your valuable tablet computer against spills and dirt, this one might well fit your bill.

Carrying Case

If you are looking for a fully-blown carry case that has not only space for you iPad (or notebook) but offers also storage space for a lot of accessories like charger etc this one might be it. Enough space to fit in even a small digital camera and comfortable to carry either by the handle or by the shoulder straps this case is more like a little “suitcase” for your iPad then just a sleeve protection. Perhaps not the everyday lightweight-stylish solution but surely deadly practical when you travel a lot.

Big Rugged Case

Rugged Case

If you like the heavy-duty look of a rubber protection and want to get a good grip on your iPad this might be your favorite model. Produced by the same people that make the Bubble Sleeve Case mentioned above, it is made of 3mm thick, shock-absorbing TPU rubber and has a snap-on / off screen protector (made of the same material) integrated. It really gives your iPad a rubberized and ruggedized outdoor and adventure feel. The ridges help you to get a firmer grip on your tablet and the screen cover snaps off and gets stored securely on the back of the device until you need it again. Again, not designed to let your iPad crash from greater heights to a concrete floor but a very decent level of device protection nevertheless.

Carrying Case with Stand

Kind of the best of both worlds, this one. It is made of leather and overs sound overall protection plus it has an integrated stand if you want to pop your iPad up to watch a video, read a book or similar. Unfortunately the angle seems just a bit too steep to type comfortable for a longer time. On the plus site it really does keep your device firmly in place and secures it from slipping out of the case. It also gives it a more professional look then the rubber case in the review above that might be more appropriate for gamers and adventurers. This one here has a distinctive “Filofax” feel to it that makes it looking good in an office or business situation. The only point that I think that could be improved would be a strap to carry it comfortably over a longer period of time. As it is just need to put it into your briefcase or similar or just carry it in your hand. But apart of this, and considered the low price, it is an excellent choice for the more “businessman type” of iPad owner. Amazon has also at the moment a great deal available that gives you an extra screen protection for free. Click through to the item to see more of the details. See below the case in “stand mode” to see how it works, but you can also simply hold it in open “book mode” for a comfortable, slightly old-fashioned reading style.

Additional iPad Protections

Never mind if you are living a rough, busy life or if you are simply paranoid about damaging your expensive device, there are more things that you can do to protect your iPad then just putting it in a sleeve or case. Especially when it comes to protecting the screen whilst working / using the tablet computer. Below three screen protection solutions, plus a cool video to show you how to apply the last one easily and correctly.

Crystal Screen Protection

Crystal Screen Protector

Like it says, it protects only your screen, so it is best used in conjunction with one of the cases reviewed above. Especially when you consider that you can get a really good deal on the Carrying Stand Case when buying both items at the same time. Click through to the product to see all the details. But back to screen protection, why do you need it and how does it work? Pretty simple, even with sparkliest, cleanest hands imaginable, you will still leave fingerprints and skin grease on your touch screen. In the end, it is called “touch” screen not for nothing ;-) So, instead of cleaning frequently the touch screen itself, you clean it once, apply the screen protector and in future you clean this one and not the screen itself. If the film becomes unsightly, you just replace it with another one (they come in packets of three) and no residue is left behind by the previous one. Just make sure you follow the instructions, apply it in a clean environment and (secret tip) work diagonally from one top corner, slowly to the diagonally opposite bottom corner, squeezing out the air bubbles as you go. If you work slowly and carefully, you will hardly see in the end that you have a screen protector installed, but you will be protected from leaving greasy fingerprints and minor scratches.

ZAGG invisibleSHIELD for Apple iPad (Full Body)
Amazon Price: Too low to display
List Price: $34.99

Full Body Shield

If you watch the first video on the right, you see that some Ipad Apps really require to have a full body shield installed ;-) A simple Ipad case wouldn't help here ;-) So, if you plan to download this Ipad game for your cat, you better get it right from the beginning. Just one word of warning, cats seem to find this Ipad app addictive, you might have to get yourself a new Ipad as your cat could refuse to give you yours back ;-)

And last, but surely not least there is Zagg's famous invisible shield. It is made from military graded film that was originally developed to protect helicopter blades from dirt and debris, but is now also available for “civil” uses. It comes with a lifetime warranty (referring to the lifetime of your device, not your own ;-) ) and also with a money-back guarantee if you are not happy with the product. Please read there instructions carefully and follow them exactly as the invisible shield can be a bit tricky to apply if you never have done something like this before. I have included at the end a video that shows the “I make money online by telling people how to make money online” blogger John Chow applying the shield to his iPad. He also describes the process in his blog post aptly entitled “How to install an invisible shield on an iPad” His video tutorial, plus the blog post and his answers in the comment section of it, should give you enough background info on how to do it right. Just don't forget to turn your iPad off before spraying it with solution!

If you are looking for a great protection that also improves your grip on the slippery iPad, but don't want to have it always in a case, Zagg's invisible shield is the best, but also most expensive option available today. To see how well it works, refer to the last video, but honestly, I would never try that at home!

Great information on the different types of cases available for the iPad. My favorite is the one with the built-in stand--makes it so much more useful when watching a video, reading or writing.

I found another company who make the iPad feel like a book and is made out of a slight wooden frame, they sold something like 50k of them in the first 6 months since the iPad was released, if you want to make money, start making new iPad case designs!
