What is a Gummi Crib Rail

Baby furniture is expensive and teeth marks don't add to their visual appeal ;-) Apart of this, the chewed wood or other material might be also unhealthy for your child or hurting its gums. For protecting your child and its crib rails you might consider applying a form of crib rail protection or cover, a gummi crib rail. I have added some videos at the bottom that show how a gummi crib rail works.

Why do Babies Chew?

Babies chew on everything that they can lay hands teeth on to alleviate the problems that come with teething. Everything hard and in reach will do and the crib rail is therefor a favorite chewing object.
By biting and chewing its crib rail your baby tries to counteract the feeling of discomfort and pain when the first teeth start to push through is tender and sensible gums. Chewing on crib rails and other objects provokes a counter pressure on those gums that the baby experiences as helpful.

When do babies start to teeth?

Babies can start to teeth as early as with four months and as late as one year and the teething goes on until they are approximately two years old. Around the age of five your child will loose its first teeth as they are replaced by the second and hopefully final edition.

How much does a Crib Rail Protector cost?

Click edit above to add content to this empty capsule.

Like always costs depend greatly on the model and brand name you choose but as a rule of thumb you should be able to get an good allround protection for your baby crib's rails for under $30. Fabric is more expensive, and less durable, than gummi.

How does a gummi crib rail work?

Basically by turning the crib rail into a big soft teether that helps relieving those teething pains, giving your child an nearly always at hand tooth teething relief. The chewy gummi crib rail covers it and protects so the crib from teeth marks and your baby from being affected negatively by the chewed material. Make sure the crib rail cover you select is safe, non-toxic, non-viny and medical grade and that it is wide enough to cover the whole rail and all other areas you want to protect.

How to apply the gummi crib rail

I have added a video on the bottom right to show how one particular brand is applied but most crib rail guards will follow the same system. Just read the instruction on the package carefully and stick to them.

How to use a Gummi Crib Rail

How to clean the gummi crib rail

All gummi crib rails are easily cleaned with a bit of warm, soapy water. Just make sure that no soap residues stay behind. Give the gummi crib rail a last wipe with clear water to make sure your child doesn't ingest any soap when it starts chewing its crib rail cover again.

When Thomas was a baby, he loved to chew on his crib. It left really ugly marks on the rails. I wish we would have had something like this back then.

Hi Chris, yes some toddlers are bit like rodents or puppies the way they chew through things ;-) SY

I hadn't seen this before. Useful - as long as one makes ure that it is absolutely non-toxic.

@Thomas St John

That is true, but as far as I can see they all are. And chewing on the wooden / painted rail itself also can carry a health risk depending the material they are made of. So much to think about when it comes to baby and toddler safety, isn't there? SY

I remember as a little one chewing on the wooden rail on the crib. I wish they had this when my own kids were little. Great article, thanks!

My daughter destroyed her crib by biting all the way around it! We didn't realize until too late; now we have railing like this around it. Good info, hopefully people follow your advice!

Yup, some new inventions would have been helpful in the past also.
